On December 4, in a message I received while attending the FGM panel where Khady spoke at the London Trust Women conference, I read the following message from the president of the IAC Dr. Morissanda Kouyate:
“On behalf of the Inter-African Committee (IAC) and its Executive Board, it is my great pleasure to inform you that the draft of the UN General Assembly resolution, banning FGM worldwide has been adopted by consensus by its third Committee. This step was crucial because it paves the way for the final adoption by the UN General Assembly in December 2012. Under the international coordination of Mrs Chantal Compaoré, First Lady of Burkina Faso, Goodwill Ambassador of the Inter-African Committee this project, conceived and launched by an NGO coalition composed of Inter-African Committee (IAC), No Peace Without Justice (NPWJ) and La Palabre, is being implemented politically and diplomatically by the Government of Burkina. Before final adoption by the United Nations General Assembly, the Inter-African Committee would like to congratulate its partners, in particular NPWJ and La Palabre, all its national committees and affiliates, as well as the Government of Burkina Faso, and its Goodwill Ambassador, on this great and highly expected victory.
This Resolution is not a point of arrival but a new starting point towards the total elimination of Female Genital Mutilation.
A communication strategy will be sent to you soon for a large distribution of the Resolution.
The struggle continues.”
