Under this year’s theme of African Presences: Envisioning Africa in Text and Deed, the African Studies Association Annual Meeting, 30 November – 2 December 2023, is the largest gathering of Africanist scholars in the world and is the flagship event of the association. Among over 2,000 scholars and professionals, UnCUT/Voices Press is proud to be represented with a paper. At 8 a.m. on 1 December, Dr. Tobe Levin von Gleichen will describe some UnCUT/VOICES books while considering challenges in medial representations of FGM. The topic is sadly susceptible to misuse by racists and misunderstanding by well-meaning, potential allies in efforts to end the harmful practice. But first person narrative, heroic memoirs, and authentic voices can obviate this challenge.
